Last week, Us Weekly got the rumor mill turning by claiming that Kristen Wiig, Andy Samberg and Jason Sudeikis were all leaving Saturday Night Live at the end of this season. If this is true, it would be a pretty big hit to the show- Samberg’s Digital Shorts are arguably the best thing going for SNL these days, with Wiig as a close second for pretty much anything she does (she is actually tied for second with Bill Hader, who so far is not rumored to be going anywhere).
All three of them (four if you count Hader) have already started down the road to success paved by the many SNL-cast members before them who parlayed their turns on the comedy sketch show into lucrative movie and TV careers (that list is enormous but includes: Chevy Chase, Dan Aykroyd, Eddie Murphy, Adam Sandler, David Spade, Chris Rock, Phil Hartman, Will Ferrell, Tina Fey, Amy Poehler, Jimmy Fallon….)
Aside from various character roles and voice work, Wiig recently co-wrote and co-starred in the smash Bridesmaids – showcasing her comedy chops and ability to lead a movie in a starring role. Sudeikus has appeared in a number of films recently, including Horrible Bosses and Hall Pass. He is also dating Olivia Wilde so good for him. Samberg had a number of character roles in movies like Friends with Benefits, What’s Your Number and I Love You, Man and is definitely most famous for his role in the comedy troop The Lonely Island – the geniuses behind Emmy and Grammy winning comedy/musical shorts like “Lazy Sunday,” “D*ck in a Box,” “Like a Boss,” and “I’m on a Boat.” He will be starring in an upcoming movie with Adam Sandler, That’s My Boy, which could be promising as long as it doesn’t feature Adam Sandler in drag.
SNL spokespeople have firmly denied that any of the cast members are going anywhere, saying that Us Weekly is flat out wrong. Reps for Wiig and Sudeikis both say that no decisions will be made until the end of the season and that the only truth here so far is that contracts for all three actors are due to expire this year.
On the flip side, Saturday’s Sofia Vergara-hosted episode featured a new female cast member, Kate McKinnon in a few sketches. Whether or not that is an anticipatory move to help brace for the departure of the show’s funniest female – I guess we won’t know until we know.
