Queen Latifah and Clair Huxtable Star in Lifetime’s Remake of Steel Magnolias

Steel Magnolias is a tried-and-true southern dramedy that gave us such wonderful lines as “If you don’t have anything nice to say…come sit by me.” It’s funny, it’s sassy, it will rip your heart out and break it in front of your face. The original starred Sally Field, Dolly Parton, Shirley McLain, Julia Roberts, Olympia Dukakis and Daryl Hannah. I say “original” because this classic movie has been remade by the Lifetime network.
Queen Latifah executive produces and stars in this all African-American version. She plays M’Lynn, Sally Field’s character. The story is the same no matter what color the actresses are – sassy southerners deal with friendship, weddings, pregnancy and untimely death. And just like the original Steel Magnolias, there are some very talented ladies cast in this movie: Phylicia Rashad (Clair Huxtable), singer Jill Scott, Alfre Woodard (Lafayette’s mom and Tara’s aunt on True Blood, among other things).
If you like Lifetime movies (and who doesn’t?) and crying your eyes out (in a good kinda way) then come October, the Queen has got you covered.
