Artist: Night Birds
Genre: Punk Rock/Surf Rock/80s Hardcore
5 Words or Less: High tempo, surfin’ guitar riffs
The Sound: If punk rock band loved the sound of California surf rock and a touch of 80s hardcore played during an all night horror show marathon.
The Scoop: From the ashes of two of the best indie New Jersey punk bands, The Ergs! And Hunchback, comes one of the most exciting punk rock bands to form in the past few years. Now residing out of the Jersey Shore and Brooklyn, Night Birds take great influence from early 80s hardcore bands such as Dead Kennedys and Adolescents but blends that sound into that of surf rock, a bit 80s hardcore, and even a pinch of pop punk here and there.
A great majority of Night Bird’s music centers on their love for crappy horror films and exciting and showy surf rock riffs and solos. While the subject matter of the tracks can be considered somewhat one dimensional, the music in the tracks change style consistently and leaves each song with it’s own identity. The material in their songs can become quite outrages and ranges from songs about giant waves destroying everything so there’s more room to surf, midnight monster movie marathons, and getting trapped into your television to name a few. It’s not hard to see that Night Birds like to have a good time and not take themselves seriously whatsoever.
Having formed in 2009, Night Birds have a slew of 7” EP records under their belt and 2 full-length records, Fresh Kills Vol. 1 (EP collection) and The Other Side of Darkness. Both albums were released in 2011. They are constantly touring and keep the entertainment to a maximum during live performances.
The track ‘Killer Waves’ off their debut Fresh Kills Vol. 1 is a great introduction to the band’s sound and zany lyrical styling’s.
