Music Video: Hold On (Alabama Shakes)

April 11th, 2012 | Posted by Philip Carey in In The Know | Music

Athens, Georgia may be the home of R.E.M., but watch out because there’s a new Athens on the map, and it’s home to the Alabama Shakes.

The Athens, Alabama quartet has released their first full-length album, and the first single “Hold On,” is already burning up the airwaves.

The Shakes have a modern, yet soulful sound.  Lead singer Brittany Howard reminds us of Janis Joplin, with her soul coming through as if she were a veteran of life and the music business.  And, she’s only 23.

But even though she’s young, Howard is already singing tales of heartache and sorrow, even including herself in the lyrics to the band’s first single, “Hold On.”

Bless my heart.
Bless my soul.
Didn’t think I’d make it to 22yrs old.
There must be someone up above…sayin’
“Come on Brittany, you got to come on up.  You got to Hold on…”

If “Hold On” is any indication of what’s to come, the Alabama Shakes are going to be making some noise for years to come.

Download Alabama Shakes’ debut album on Amazon.com or iTunes.
