This season of MAD MEN we’re getting the twists and turns of an 80′s primetime soap opera.
Sexy dances. Fat Wives. Murder? And now Pete and Lane duking it out old-school style.
And it was fantastic.

I actually feel for both characters.
Pete is highly ambitious but equally talented, and has been rewarded for such talents at the office. Still, he’s of a different generation than the rest of the partners and will always be playing catch-up. Instead of playing the game, his frustrations boiled over, as evident in this week’s Mad Men Moment.
As far as Lane is concerned, he is often paralyzed by his lack of confidence in social situations and like Pete, will always be an outsider at the firm.
So while the gang (sans-Lane) was out getting their jollies, the firm’s deal with Jaguar was falling apart. In fact, it fell apart BECAUSE of it.
Lane confronted the team and this is what went down:
Pete: “It was Edwin’s idea.”
Lane: “Impossible. He would never!”
Pete: “He didn’t ask you because he thinks you’re a homo.”
Lane: “I can’t believe the hours I’ve put in to helping you become the monster you’ve become.”
Pete: “I was doing my job.”
Lane: “It was my account!”
Pete: “Your account? You have no idea what you’re doing. In fact, as far as I can tell, our need for you disappeared the day after you fired us.”
Lane: “That will be enough of that…Mr. Campbell, you and I are going to address that insult.”
Pete: “Are you kidding me?”
Lane: “No. You’re a grimy little pimp. As soon as I raise my hands, I warn you, it shall be too late to run.”
Awesome. Another classic exchange from the writing staff of MAD MEN.
And yes, Pete has become a bit of a monster, but for all the great moments from the scene (the other partners closing the curtains, their comical fighting stances, Joan listening in, Lane’s send-off) the essence of the scene was captured by Joan moments after when she told Lane “Everyone in this office has wanted to do that to Pete Campbell”.
So once again, Pete talks the talk and cannot back it up, and Lane finally gets a little bit of respect around the office.
Here’s AMC’s behind the scenes look at the episode, and in particular, this week’s Mad Men Moment:
