Did The Mentalist Just Reveal Red John in Episode 100?October 29th, 2012 | Posted by in Television
Watching the 100th episode of THE MENTALIST Sunday night was revealing for two reasons: 1) we see how Patrick Jane meets Lisbon, and 2) we may have caught a glimpse of Red John.
We don’t normally recap this show, but we’re still going to ruin some stuff for you. Turn back now!
The episode takes place about one year after Jane’s wife and daughter are murdered by Red John. He essentially strolls into CBI and forces Lisbon to eventually show him the Red John files. He sorta inserts himself into an investigation and gives the team (minus Van Pelt) a first-look at his ability to solve crimes.
We get to see the “LEGO head” Cho and a Rigsby (with goatee). Even Gregory Itzin returns as the old boss, Minelli.
But nevermind how cool it is to see how Patrick came to join CBI, the last three minutes of the episode was eye-opening.
Minelli receives a call from FBI Director Alexa Schultz (who we had seen in the season premiere this year), and she asks to be kept in the loop on the Red John case. Minelli says no problem. She hangs up the cell phone in the back of her limo and tells another man that it’s done. He thanks her.
In years past, we never would have seen this guy’s face, but this time we did. At first blush, it looks like Schultz’s FBI agent Mancini, who we also met this season, but it’s not. At the very least, it’s not the same actor playing “limo guy.”
So, let’s assume that this is, in fact, a new character who appears to have control over Alexa. The heavy implication is that he is Red John, and creator Bruno Heller has said in interviews that they do plan to reveal Red John sooner rather than later.
But we’ve been down this road before. At the end of Season 3, we all thought Jane had killed Red John in a mall food court, and Bradley Whitford had been brilliantly cast in that role. Of course, we discovered that Whitford’s character was merely working for Red John and not the smiling face Jane was hoping to see.
My money is on this guy being another red herring, but we’ll never really know until Heller decides it’s time for us to find out. That’s the greatest mystery in this show, and the day it’s revealed will be a major turning point in the series – like finding out who killed Laura Palmer.
It’s only the fifth episode of the fifth season. Let’s hope that whatever happens, The Mentalist fares better than TWIN PEAKS did after the reveal.
By the way, the show’s full episodes are finally available online at CBS.com.
