Starz has just released the first trailer for season 2 of their critically acclaimed series BOSS, starring Kelsey Grammer as the fictional mayor of Chicago Tom Kane.
And like the first season, Starz is making you think this show is about Kane, but its not. The first season was plagued with subplots that tried to blend into a larger story of the power struggle in the windy city. But all of the interesting storylines were lost in that struggle, not strengthened.
The show is best when Tom Kane is the center, but I couldn’t help but think watching the first season Grammer was more of a supporting character than the series lead. Let’s not kid ourselves, BOSS is not to Chicago as The Wire was for Baltimore. That will never happen. So the only hope for season 2 is that BOSS realizes this and embraces Tom Kane as their tragic hero.
Grammer earned a Golden Globe for his role on the show, and it seems that if there will be a season 3, season 2 must focus on Kane’s struggle for power within a corrupt political system, not solely on his physical well-being deteriorating before his own eyes.
BOSS returns to Starz on August 17.
